iRobot Scooba 380 and Scooba 350 Released!

BREAKING: iRobot has released the next-generation iRobot Scooba 380 for $499. (NEW PRICE CUT 4/10/08! Now $449!) It cleans 850 square feet, unlike the 250 square feet for the Scooba 5800, and does so by cleaning faster and more efficiently. (The Scooba 380 is also known as model 6050). Save 10% on all accessories with our exclusive coupon code RSN10 at Checkout!

The Scooba 380 has been selling well (having starred in some well-received TV infomercials) and had briefly sold out. But the Scooba 380 is now in stock and ready for immediate shipment.

The new iRobot Scooba 350 also has the faster cleaning technology and is $399, but cleans 500 square feet. (Also known as model 6000).

The company has discontinued the Scooba 5900.

More Scooba deals (as low as $199) are available in our Scooba buyer's guide.

One thing I don't understand is why irobot thinks this new $399 Scooba is going to sell well. As near as I can tell, it cleans about the same amount of area as the old 5900, but does it faster. Does irobot think that a bad selling robot will suddenly sell well at the same price point with only that one additional feature?

I think this new Scooba could very well be the trick to convince the Consumer Reports's of the world to give Scooba another look. They complained about the Scooba's speed, etc. in their report. A more efficient robot -- apparently 70 percent more -- could be a big seller if it is properly marketed and well-reviewed. I assume that eventually these models will replace the Scooba 5800 as well later this year.

By more efficient, do you mean more time efficient? And by more time efficient, do you mean that the Scooba runs faster, has a better battery, or an improved algorithm (or perhaps all of the above)?

By the way, don't get me wrong, this is a good development, I am just surprised at the high price. Irobot must have decided that the slowness of the old models was the primary obstacle at the $399 pricepoint.

I wonder if the hardware has been improved at all, for example, to improve the durability of the robot? My parent's Scooba broke within a few weeks.

The new models should have improved reliability. The pumps have been upgraded as well as the battery charging mechanism.
But speed and size of room capability -- not sure how they accomplish this -- should be something that appeals to everyone. If you can either clean your whole floor in 45 minutes instead of 2 45 minute sessions, or clean your kitchen area in 30 minutes instead of 45, that's a significant improvement...

Speaking of new product lines, do you have any thoughts on a new roomba this year?

I figure irobot will have to come up with a fairly significant addition to its roomba line before 2008. We already know that Evolution is pairing up with a major appliance label to bring out a robot vacuum in early 2008. In addition, Dyson may have something of their own out by then, based on the rumors floating around.

You can only imagine how Dyson, master marketers that they are, would couch their new product in comparison with the bump sensor roomba. Look what Dyson did to the view of the traditional vacuum cleaner. I think irobot would be well served to come out with a better navigating model before Dyson introduces its first robot.

Looks like there will be a new Roomba. See the link below.

I tried to purchase the Scooba 380 on the irobot web store using the Coupon Code 701370 to get the 20% discount. It said the purchase did not qualify for that promotion.
Any ideas? I would like to save the $100 if at all possible.
Thank you.

anonymous -- I just checked and they no longer accept the code for the Scooba 380 alone, BUT, you can effectively get a Free Roomba 400. Here's how: The code still works if you add any Roomba to the cart in addition to the Scooba 380. So you can get the Roomba 400, for example, plus the Scooba 380, for $495.99 plus shipping. Still a great deal.

Scuba is a great product, but needs technology improvement. Better software program would help. It works well only if there are no obstacles in a square room. Almost purchased the 380 model, however after asking some questions it was obvious to me that the only change made was the speed and battery life. The Scuba still get’s lost in my L kitchen. Some areas are cleaned 100 times some none and no matter how big is the area it will work until runs out of power. I’m waiting for a scuba that will be programmable for each room. All you need is to run it once around the edges of the room and let the company give me algorithm for that square footage. It could clean few rooms that way on one battery life and not spent 3 hours on 200 square feet.

I have been trying to get an answer for this. Does the SCUBA has an option of vacuum the floors first and then clean with chemical solution. I dont have any carpeted floors and all of them tiles, can SCUBA vacuum the dirt first and then clean with liquid ? Is it a problem if I run SCUBA on a dirt floor ?

I read on the irobot site that scooba can vacuum first, but only a small amount. I have both a Roomba and a "Scooby" and I always run Roomba first.

I love both of them!!! I can't wait for the Robot that dusts!
